Work: A Philosophical Investigation

This dissertation comprises three independent papers, each presenting a philosophical analysis of a different aspect of work. The first paper explores what it means to work together and presents a new account of collective action. The second paper discusses what makes work meaningful, arguing that the answer lies in how work expresses people’s commitments. The third paper shows that people can value things, including their work, as irreplaceable; explores the value of valuing things as irreplaceable; and argues that the ability of people to value things as irreplaceable is something that governments should facilitate and promote.
