Recent work suggests that we must move beyond a macro–micro approach. This introduction sketches reasons for going beyond macro and micro and reviews alternative approaches to explaining cultural and educational processes. The following articles illustrate such alternatives and develop their own arguments about macro, micro, and other relevant scales. This is the peer reviewed version of the article which has been published in final form at http://dx.doi.org/10.1111/j.1548-1492.2012.01165.xtimescalesagencystructurelanguage usesocial theoryAnthropologyEducationSocial and Philosophical Foundations of EducationBeyond Macro and Micro in the Linguistic Anthropology of EducationArticle
